Josué 18

¹ וַיִּקָּ֨הֲל֜וּ כָּל־עֲדַ֤ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ שִׁלֹ֔ה וַיַּשְׁכִּ֥ינוּ שָׁ֖ם אֶת־אֹ֣הֶל מֹועֵ֑ד וְהָאָ֥רֶץ נִכְבְּשָׁ֖ה לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ wayiqahalu kal־ʿadat beney־yiseraʾel shiloh wayashekiynu sham ʾet־ʾohel mowʿed wehaʾarets nikhebeshah lifeneyhem׃

² וַיִּוָּֽתְרוּ֙ בִּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־חָלְק֖וּ אֶת־נַֽחֲלָתָ֑ם שִׁבְעָ֖ה שְׁבָטִֽים׃ wayiuateru biveney yiseraʾel ʾasher loʾ־ḥalequ ʾet־naḥalatam shiveʿah shevaṭiym׃

³ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהֹושֻׁ֖עַ אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עַד־אָ֙נָה֙ אַתֶּ֣ם מִתְרַפִּ֔ים לָבֹוא֙ לָרֶ֣שֶׁת אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר֙ נָתַ֣ן לָכֶ֔ם יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י אֲבֹֽותֵיכֶֽם׃ wayoʾmer yehowshuaʿ ʾel־beney yiseraʾel ʿad־ʾanah ʾatem miterapiym lavowʾ lareshet ʾet־haʾarets ʾasher natan lakhem yehwah ʾelohey ʾavowteykhem׃

⁴ הָב֥וּ לָכֶ֛ם שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה אֲנָשִׁ֖ים לַשָּׁ֑בֶט וְאֶשְׁלָחֵ֗ם וְיָקֻ֜מוּ וְיִֽתְהַלְּכ֥וּ בָאָ֛רֶץ וְיִכְתְּב֥וּ אֹותָ֛הּ לְפִ֥י נַֽחֲלָתָ֖ם וְיָבֹ֥אוּ אֵלָֽי׃ havu lakhem sheloshah ʾanashiym lashaveṭ weʾeshelaḥem weyaqumu weyitehalekhu vaʾarets weyikhetevu ʾowtah lefiy naḥalatam weyavoʾu ʾelay׃

⁵ וְהִֽתְחַלְּק֥וּ אֹתָ֖הּ לְשִׁבְעָ֣ה חֲלָקִ֑ים יְהוּדָ֞ה יַעֲמֹ֤ד עַל־גְּבוּלֹו֙ מִנֶּ֔גֶב וּבֵ֥ית יֹוסֵ֛ף יַעַמְד֥וּ עַל־גְּבוּלָ֖ם מִצָּפֹֽון׃ wehiteḥalequ ʾotah leshiveʿah ḥalaqiym yehudah yaʿamod ʿal־gevulow minegev uveyt yowsef yaʿamedu ʿal־gevulam mitsafown׃

⁶ וְאַתֶּ֞ם תִּכְתְּב֤וּ אֶת־הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ שִׁבְעָ֣ה חֲלָקִ֔ים וַֽהֲבֵאתֶ֥ם אֵלַ֖י הֵ֑נָּה וְיָרִ֨יתִי לָכֶ֤ם גֹּורָל֙ פֹּ֔ה לִפְנֵ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ weʾatem tikhetevu ʾet־haʾarets shiveʿah ḥalaqiym wahaveʾtem ʾelay henah weyariytiy lakhem gowral poh lifeney yehwah ʾeloheynu׃

⁷ כִּ֠י אֵֽין־חֵ֤לֶק לַלְוִיִּם֙ בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֔ם כִּֽי־כְהֻנַּ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה נַחֲלָתֹ֑ו וְגָ֡ד וּרְאוּבֵ֡ן וַחֲצִי֩ שֵׁ֨בֶט הַֽמְנַשֶּׁ֜ה לָקְח֣וּ נַחֲלָתָ֗ם מֵעֵ֤בֶר לַיַּרְדֵּן֙ מִזְרָ֔חָה אֲשֶׁר֙ נָתַ֣ן לָהֶ֔ם מֹשֶׁ֖ה עֶ֥בֶד יְהוָֽה׃ kiy ʾeyn־ḥeleq lalewiyim beqirebekhem kiy־khehunat yehwah naḥalatow wegad ureʾuven waḥatsiy sheveṭ hamenasheh laqeḥu naḥalatam meʿever layareden mizeraḥah ʾasher natan lahem mosheh ʿeved yehwah׃

L’attente ne doit pas devenir une installation dans l’indécision

Josué interpelle les tribus qui n’ont pas encore reçu de part et commande une description du pays. Lévi et les tribus orientales restent distingués selon leur situation. Le reproche porte sur ce moment collectif précis ; il ne permet pas de qualifier toute attente de paresse ni de nier les obstacles qui empêchent réellement une personne d’agir.

⁹ וַיֵּלְכ֤וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ וַיַּעַבְר֣וּ בָאָ֔רֶץ וַיִּכְתְּב֧וּהָ לֶֽעָרִ֛ים לְשִׁבְעָ֥ה חֲלָקִ֖ים עַל־סֵ֑פֶר וַיָּבֹ֧אוּ אֶל־יְהֹושֻׁ֛עַ אֶל־הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה שִׁלֹֽה׃ wayelekhu haʾanashiym wayaʿaveru vaʾarets wayikhetevuah leʿariym leshiveʿah ḥalaqiym ʿal־sefer wayavoʾu ʾel־yehowshuaʿ ʾel־hamaḥaneh shiloh׃

¹⁰ וַיַּשְׁלֵךְ֩ לָהֶ֨ם יְהֹושֻׁ֧עַ גֹּורָ֛ל בְּשִׁלֹ֖ה לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיְחַלֶּק־שָׁ֨ם יְהֹושֻׁ֧עַ אֶת־הָאָ֛רֶץ לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כְּמַחְלְקֹתָֽם׃ פ wayashelekhe lahem yehowshuaʿ gowral beshiloh lifeney yehwah wayeḥaleq־sham yehowshuaʿ ʾet־haʾarets liveney yiseraʾel kemaḥeleqotam׃ f

L’écrit et le sort participent au même partage

Les délégués parcourent le pays, consignent ses villes et rapportent une description en sept parts. Le tirage devant Dieu vient avec ce travail préparatoire, pas à sa place. Le récit n’oppose donc pas confiance et organisation ; il ne donne pas davantage une règle demandant de résoudre toutes les décisions actuelles par le hasard.

¹² וַיְהִ֨י לָהֶ֧ם הַגְּב֛וּל לִפְאַ֥ת צָפֹ֖ונָה מִן־הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן וְעָלָ֣ה הַגְּבוּל֩ אֶל־כֶּ֨תֶף יְרִיחֹ֜ו מִצָּפֹ֗ון וְעָלָ֤ה בָהָר֙ יָ֔מָּה [וְהָיָה כ] (וְהָיוּ֙ ק) תֹּֽצְאֹתָ֔יו מִדְבַּ֖רָה בֵּ֥ית אָֽוֶן׃ wayehiy lahem hagevul lifeʾat tsafownah min־hayareden weʿalah hagevul ʾel־ketef yeriyḥow mitsafown weʿalah vahar yamah [wehayah kh] (wehayu q) totseʾotayw midebarah beyt ʾawen׃

¹³ וְעָבַר֩ מִשָּׁ֨ם הַגְּב֜וּל ל֗וּזָה אֶל־כֶּ֤תֶף ל֙וּזָה֙ נֶ֔גְבָּה הִ֖יא בֵּֽית־אֵ֑ל וְיָרַ֤ד הַגְּבוּל֙ עַטְרֹ֣ות אַדָּ֔ר עַל־הָהָ֕ר אֲשֶׁ֛ר מִנֶּ֥גֶב לְבֵית־חֹרֹ֖ון תַּחְתֹּֽון׃ weʿavar misham hagevul luzah ʾel־ketef luzah negebah hiyʾ beyt־ʾel weyarad hagevul ʿaṭerowt ʾadar ʿal־hahar ʾasher minegev leveyt־ḥorown taḥetown׃

¹⁴ וְתָאַ֣ר הַגְּבוּל֩ וְנָסַ֨ב לִפְאַת־יָ֜ם נֶ֗גְבָּה מִן־הָהָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר עַל־פְּנֵ֥י בֵית־חֹרֹון֮ נֶגְבָּה֒ [וְהָיָה כ] (וְהָי֣וּ ק) תֹֽצְאֹתָ֗יו אֶל־קִרְיַת־בַּ֙עַל֙ הִ֚יא קִרְיַ֣ת יְעָרִ֔ים עִ֖יר בְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה זֹ֖את פְּאַת־יָֽם׃ wetaʾar hagevul wenasav lifeʾat־yam negebah min־hahar ʾasher ʿal־peney veyt־ḥorown negebah [wehayah kh] (wehayu q) totseʾotayw ʾel־qireyat־baʿal hiyʾ qireyat yeʿariym ʿiyr beney yehudah zoʾt peʾat־yam׃

¹⁵ וּפְאַת־נֶ֕גְבָּה מִקְצֵ֖ה קִרְיַ֣ת יְעָרִ֑ים וְיָצָ֤א הַגְּבוּל֙ יָ֔מָּה וְיָצָ֕א אֶל־מַעְיַ֖ן מֵ֥י נֶפְתֹּֽוחַ׃ ufeʾat־negebah miqetseh qireyat yeʿariym weyatsaʾ hagevul yamah weyatsaʾ ʾel־maʿeyan mey nefetowḥa׃

¹⁶ וְיָרַ֨ד הַגְּב֜וּל אֶל־קְצֵ֣ה הָהָ֗ר אֲשֶׁר֙ עַל־פְּנֵי֙ גֵּ֣י בֶן־הִנֹּ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֛ר בְּעֵ֥מֶק רְפָאִ֖ים צָפֹ֑ונָה וְיָרַד֩ גֵּ֨י הִנֹּ֜ם אֶל־כֶּ֤תֶף הַיְבוּסִי֙ נֶ֔גְבָּה וְיָרַ֖ד עֵ֥ין רֹגֵֽל׃ weyarad hagevul ʾel־qetseh hahar ʾasher ʿal־peney gey ven־hinom ʾasher beʿemeq refaʾiym tsafownah weyarad gey hinom ʾel־ketef hayevusiy negebah weyarad ʿeyn rogel׃

¹⁷ וְתָאַ֣ר מִצָּפֹ֗ון וְיָצָא֙ עֵ֣ין שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ וְיָצָא֙ אֶל־גְּלִילֹ֔ות אֲשֶׁר־נֹ֖כַח מַעֲלֵ֣ה אֲדֻמִּ֑ים וְיָרַ֕ד אֶ֥בֶן בֹּ֖הַן בֶּן־רְאוּבֵֽן׃ wetaʾar mitsafown weyatsaʾ ʿeyn shemesh weyatsaʾ ʾel־geliylowt ʾasher־nokhaḥ maʿaleh ʾadumiym weyarad ʾeven bohan ben־reʾuven׃

¹⁸ וְעָבַ֛ר אֶל־כֶּ֥תֶף מוּל־הָֽעֲרָבָ֖ה צָפֹ֑ונָה וְיָרַ֖ד הָעֲרָבָֽתָה׃ weʿavar ʾel־ketef mul־haʿaravah tsafownah weyarad haʿaravatah׃

¹⁹ וְעָבַ֨ר הַגְּב֜וּל אֶל־כֶּ֣תֶף בֵּית־חָגְלָה֮ צָפֹונָה֒ [וְהָיָה כ] (וְהָי֣וּ ׀ ק) [תֹּצְאֹותָיו כ] (תֹּצְאֹ֣ות ק) הַגְּב֗וּל אֶל־לְשֹׁ֤ון יָם־הַמֶּ֙לַח֙ צָפֹ֔ונָה אֶל־קְצֵ֥ה הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן נֶ֑גְבָּה זֶ֖ה גְּב֥וּל נֶֽגֶב׃ weʿavar hagevul ʾel־ketef beyt־ḥagelah tsafownah [wehayah kh] (wehayu ׀ q) [totseʾowtayw kh] (totseʾowt q) hagevul ʾel־leshown yam־hamelaḥ tsafownah ʾel־qetseh hayareden negebah zeh gevul negev׃

²⁰ וְהַיַּרְדֵּ֥ן יִגְבֹּל־אֹתֹ֖ו לִפְאַת־קֵ֑דְמָה זֹ֡את נַחֲלַת֩ בְּנֵ֨י בִנְיָמִ֧ן לִגְבֽוּלֹתֶ֛יהָ סָבִ֖יב לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃ wehayareden yigebol־ʾotow lifeʾat־qedemah zoʾt naḥalat beney vineyamin ligevuloteyha saviyv lemishepeḥotam׃

Benjamin reçoit une place entre deux ensembles importants

Les limites rejoignent les points décrits pour Juda et le domaine de Joseph. Cette situation intermédiaire contribue à la cohérence de la répartition, sans transformer Benjamin en simple espace résiduel. Les noms de sources, de vallées et de hauteurs rappellent qu’une frontière se raconte à travers des lieux reconnaissables pour les destinataires anciens.

Les villes nommées portent plusieurs histoires à la fois

Jéricho, Gabaon et Jérusalem figurent dans la liste. Leurs récits ne deviennent pas pour autant identiques : Gabaon est lié à un traité et les Jébusiens demeurent à Jérusalem selon le chapitre 15. Une liste territoriale et un récit de conquête ne donnent pas le même type d’information ; il faut conserver cette différence de fonction.
