1 וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ בְנֵֽי־יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל כָּל־הָ֨עֵדָ֤ה מִדְבַּר־צִן֙ בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הָֽרִאשֹׁ֔ון וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב הָעָ֖ם בְּקָדֵ֑שׁ וַתָּ֤מָת שָׁם֙ מִרְיָ֔ם וַתִּקָּבֵ֖ר שָֽׁם׃ wayavoʾu veney־yiseraʾel kal־haʿedah midebar־tsin baḥodesh hariʾshown wayeshev haʿam beqadesh watamat sham mireyam watiqaver sham׃

4 וְלָמָ֤ה הֲבֵאתֶם֙ אֶת־קְהַ֣ל יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־הַמִּדְבָּ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה לָמ֣וּת שָׁ֔ם אֲנַ֖חְנוּ וּבְעִירֵֽנוּ׃ welamah haveʾtem ʾet־qehal yehwah ʾel־hamidebar hazeh lamut sham ʾanaḥenu uveʿiyrenu׃
5 וְלָמָ֤ה הֶֽעֱלִיתֻ֙נוּ֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם לְהָבִ֣יא אֹתָ֔נוּ אֶל־הַמָּקֹ֥ום הָרָ֖ע הַזֶּ֑ה לֹ֣א ׀ מְקֹ֣ום זֶ֗רַע וּתְאֵנָ֤ה וְגֶ֙פֶן֙ וְרִמֹּ֔ון וּמַ֥יִם אַ֖יִן לִשְׁתֹּֽות׃ welamah heʿeliytunu mimitserayim lehaviyʾ ʾotanu ʾel־hamaqowm haraʿ hazeh loʾ ׀ meqowm zeraʿ uteʾenah wegefen werimown umayim ʾayin lishetowt׃

Le résultat favorable ne justifie pas tout moyen
Moïse doit parler au rocher, mais le frappe et tient une parole de reproche devant l’assemblée. Dieu qualifie la faute comme un défaut de confiance et de sanctification devant le peuple. Il serait réducteur d’enfermer cette réponse dans une seule explication psychologique ; l’eau reçue ne supprime pas le jugement porté sur les responsables.

La fraternité invoquée ne garantit pas le passage
La demande adressée à Édom rappelle la parenté et les souffrances d’Israël, avec une proposition de ne pas prendre les ressources du pays. Le refus conduit cette fois à un détour, non à une bataille. Le récit ne présente donc pas toute opposition sur la route comme une autorisation immédiate de conquête.
